Culture

Summer will win you over with an events calendar that boasts an international prestige and several religious, cultural, sport and music events.
Jazz, blues, classical melodies and ethnic rhythms are the background sounds of Summertime events in Sulcis Iglesiente and their calendar doesn’t end until October or November. Wine and food are also protagonists: first of all there is “Girotonno” in Carloforte, when tuna becomes the prince of the table during an international competition for chefs de cuisine showing many different fish recipes. Sulcis Iglesiente offers a huge calendar of town festivals. It’s a true mine of flavors where you can taste “malloreddus” (traditional pasta), well-cooked sheep, lamb and fish, not forgetting the local wines: enjoy a glass of ruby red Carignano DOC from Sulcis or a glass of strong Sardinian Cannonau.
The Mauritanian Wedding is the traditional nuptial ceremony celebrated the first week of August by the Maureddus (i.e. the Moors), as the inhabitants of the lower Sulcis were once referred to. This is a joyful and varied ritual which is rich in music, traditional dances, costumes and food, for a symbolic representation which is ready to offer spectators some of its magic in the main square of Santadi town.

Description
“Girotonno” is a big party that lasts four days, from June 3rd to 6th. Tuna tasting is the main event: here tuna is coke in many ways by international chefs de cuisine that show different sea cultures. Fresh tuna or cooked tuna is the main course, always served with the best red wines selected by the most popular experts on wine and food. Girotonno is an exclusive event that develops in 4 days of eating, dancing and singing.

Description
It is during the Girotonno that Carloforte gives its best: the crowning moment is the “World Tuna Cuisine Competition – a world championship around quality tuna”, the international competition where tuna fish is interpreted in new ways, cooked or raw, by chefs from all the continents of the world, to be judged by a jury of journalists and gastronomy experts who award the best recipe a large dish, as the symbol of victory.
The initiatives take place in the colourful setting of the Tuna Village, the artist’s craftwork on show with demonstrations of the production of tuna and tastings of the delicious meat of the seas, of selected Sardinian wines and typical Carloforte products, i.e. cous cous. On the last Sunday in May there are several religious celebrations, that are devoted to San Giovanni Battista, Madonna dello schiavo, patron of the town and San Pietro, fishermen’s patron.
